Spring is just around the corner / La primavera a la vuelta de la esquina

By late August, winter was drawing to a close and little signs of spring were emerging. Trees and flowers all over the property began to bloom, and the birds were busy building their nests.

A finales de agosto, el invierno estaba ya retirándose y pequeños signos de la primavera se estaban revelando. Árboles y flores en toda la propiedad estaban floreciendo, y los pájaros estaban ocupados construyendo sus nidos.

To our surprise and delight, several birds native to the region, “uchis,” constructed their homes (nothing short of architectural masterpieces!) dangling from the branches of a ceibo tree on our property.

Nos alegró ver que algunos “uchis” (pájaros típicos de la región)  habían construido sus hogares (¡obras impresionantes de arquitectura!) colgando de las ramas de un ceibo en nuestro terreno.

We discovered that we have some new neighbors living underneath our staircase. Their house quite literally appears to be hanging by a thread!

Descubrimos que tenemos nuevos vecinos viviendo debajo de las gradas. ¡Su casa parece que estuviera colgando literalmente de un hilo!

Parrots began visiting us daily to feast on the delicious ceibo flowers.

Los loros empezaron a visitarnos diariamente para comer las sabrosas flores del ceibo.

We noticed that a climbing vine in the garden had begun to flower, and was rapidly spreading across the ground and weaving its way up the nearby bushes. This particular vine happens to be in the Jasmine family and its little white flowers smell absolutely divine. We decided to build a ladder out of bamboo for the plant to grow up, decorating the empty wall nearby and perfuming our patio with its lovely aroma.

Nos dimos cuenta de que una planta trepadora en el jardín había empezado a florecer, y estaba creciendo rápidamente por el suelo y trepando en las plantas a su alrededor. Esta particular trepadora es de la familia del Jazmín y sus pequeñas florcitas blancas huelen increíblemente bien. Decidimos construir una escalera de bambú para que la planta trepara, y así decorara una pared vacía perfumando el patio con su rico olor.

With Spring just around the corner, the seedlings we had been keeping in our makeshift plant nursery were finally ready for their new homes.

Con la primavera tocando a la puerta de la casa, las plantas que cuidábamos en nuestro “vivero” estaban listas para mudarse a sus nuevos hogares por fin. 

In July, we had collected old pieces of trash that we found nearby, filled each receptacle with soil and compost, poked holes in the bottom and planted seeds.

En julio, habíamos juntado botellas de plástico que encontramos en el área; llenamos cada contenedor con tierra y abono, hicimos huecos debajo y plantamos semillas.

By late August the seedlings were a few inches tall. We spent several cool mornings transplanting the sunflower, calendula, wildflower, bell pepper, and lettuce seedlings from their recycled bottles into their cozy new spots in the garden. Above you see Erin getting ready to plant a sunflower, sprouted inside an abandoned old rain boot we found.

A fines de agosto las plantas ya habían crecido bastante. Aprovechamos del frescor de las mañanas para trasplantar las plantas de girasol, caléndula, flores silvestres, morrones y lechuga desde sus botellas recicladas a sus nuevos y acogedores lugares en el jardín. Arriba ven a Erin, a punto de plantar un girasol que creció dentro de una bota vieja de lluvia que encontramos.

Even the in the dead of winter Coroico stays relatively sunny and warm, so plants like the locoto (Bolivian chili pepper) flourish year-round. Check out the weekly harvest!

Incluso en medio del invierno, Coroico se mantiene con bastante calor y sol, así que plantas como el locoto (chilis típicos de la zona) producen todo el año. ¡Miren la cosecha de la semana!

By the end of July we had finished the majority of the winter harvest and decided it was time to turn our attention toward fixing up the building. When it was being built, Inti’s mother had to work full-time in La Paz yet still managed to come to Coroico to oversee construction several days a week. Even so, construction often lagged and many jobs were left incomplete. We realized that the window frames hadn’t been bolted into their sockets, and the doors were sitting crooked on their hinges.

A finales de julio había terminado la cosecha del invierno y decidimos empezar a dedicar tiempo a la casa reparando cosas que exigían nuestra atención en el momento. Cuando la casa estaba siendo construida, la madre de Inti no podía estar todo el tiempo en Coroico supervisando la construcción ya que tenía que trabajar en su tienda La Paz. Como resultado a esto, la construcción tardaba y muchas cosas se dejaban incompletas. Nos dimos cuenta de que los marcos de las ventanas no estaban aseguradas a la pared, y las puertas estaban chuecas.

We shaved excess wood off the edges of the doors so that they fit properly in their frames and didn’t scratch the floor as they opened. We also treated the wood using linseed oil.

Reducimos el tamaño de las puertas para que concuerden con los marcos y no raspen el suelo al abrir. También tratamos la madera con aceite de linaza.

We sanded and varnished the wooden window frames. Then we drilled holes through the frames and into the wall to bolt them into place.

Lijamos y barnizamos los marcos de las ventanas. Luego, perforamos atravesando el muro para asegurar en diferentes puntos los marcos a la pared.

Progress felt slow and monotonous, but day by day the place tidied up and our spirits lifted as we saw the results of all our hard work.

El progreso parecía lento y monótono, pero poco a poco se arreglaban las cosas y nuestra moral mejoraba mientras veíamos los resultados de nuestro trabajo.

In an effort to beautify the hallway outside our bedroom, we gathered flat stones, mixed up some cement, and went to work decorating the concrete dividers along the railing.

A modo de embellecer el pasillo al lado de nuestro cuarto, juntamos piedras, mezclamos cemento, y nos pusimos a decorar el barandado.

When we sat down to discuss the physical layout of the hostel, we started scheming about expanding the patio and building an additional staircase. Doña Mary suggested that we break out the molds she had saved from a previous business venture and start producing cement pillars here on the property in order to use them in future constructions. And so, pillar-making became part of our daily routine.

Cuando discutimos el diseño del hostal, empezamos a idear acerca de expandir el patio y construir más gradas. Doña Mary sugirió que buscáramos los viejos moldes que había guardado de su previo negocio y empezáramos a producir balaustres para usar en futuras construcciones en la propiedad. Así fue que hacer balaustres se volvió parte de nuestra rutina diaria.

We could only find three molds, but three per day turned out to be plenty. Each pillar ends up requiring about 1 hour of labor: we clean the molds, grease them, fasten them shut with wire, and insert an iron rod. Then we sift sand, rinse it with water, and add cement to make the perfect mixture to pour into the molds. 24 hours later, out comes a fresh new cement pillar! We now have 33 and counting.

Encontramos solamente tres moldes, pero resultó ser suficiente hacer tres balaustres por día. Cada uno requiere mas o menos una hora de trabajo: limpiamos los moldes, los aceitamos, los cerramos con alambre, y ponemos fierro. Luego ceñimos arena, la lavamos con agua, y le añadimos cemento para hacer la mezcla perfecta para vaciar los moldes. 24 horas después, ¡sale un balaustre fresco del molde! Ahora tenemos 33, y contando…

Some of the pillars have little indentations from air pockets that get caught in the cement mixture. Over time, these holes accumulate water and dirt and cause the pillars to erode. In order to prevent this, we paint a thin layer of cement over the rough spots to smooth them out.

Algunos de los balaustres tienen pequeños huecos causados por burbujas de aire atrapado al vaciar la mezcla a los moldes. Con el tiempo, estos huecos se llenan con agua y suciedad y hacen que se deterioren los balaustres. Para prevenir esto, pintamos una capa de cemento sobre la superficie para que esté lisa.
